Oinoussai Benevolent Fund
The Oinoussai Benevolent Fund was set up by Oinoussians living in London in 1942 to help those compatriots on the island of Oinousses who were suffering from wartime difficulties.
Oinousses is a group of small islands located in the North-Eastern Aegean Sea, between the eastern coast of Chios and the Turkish coastline. The largest of the islands, Oinoussai, is the only one that is inhabited, with a winter population of around 800 people.
For almost 80 years, the Oinoussai Benevolent Fund has been providing assistance and support to those in need on the island, as well as supporting various worthy causes, including the prestigious Naval Academy for Merchant Mariners. As a result of the recent economic crisis in Greece, the Fund’s assistance has been increasingly needed, especially to help poor and sick compatriots.
Today, there are many Oinoussians living in the diaspora who continue to support the needs of the island, primarily through the Oinoussai Benevolent Fund, which is now a UK-registered charity. The Executive Committee is grateful to the Fund’s members and donors, whose generosity enables the provision of vital assistance to continue for Oinoussians in need. Furthermore, the Fund is able to contribute to various infrastructure projects on the island.
