Victoria Hislop Visits Oinousses

On Thursday 5th September 2024, our President and Vice-president co-ordinated an impromptu visit to the island of Victoria Hislop, journalist, celebrated author, philhellene and honorary Greek,  who had wanted to visit our shores after having watched our OBF short documentary on Oinousses a few months ago.
She was welcomed by our President and Vice-president along with some  members of the OBF committee. This  entourage accompanied her during her brief, informal but busy itinerary in her flying visit.
She met the Mayor of Oinousses and his council members. She presented the Mayor with her latest novel, The Figurine and in return, she received a commemorative plaque from him.
St. Nicholas church was the next stop. She admired the views, the traditional homes and remarked on the cleanliness of the roads. Our priest, Father Ioannis, greeted her in English with the words,   ” Welcome Victoria. I know you!”. She was entranced with the church, remarking on the stunning stained glass, the dome and the diverse icons.
After having walked back down to the Seamanship Square by the harbour, she paid her respects at the statue of the unknown sailor. It was a poignant moment as she looked at the names of all who have perished at sea from our shores.
Next on the tour was the visit to the Nautical Museum where she was truly fascinated at the history of the island’s seafarers. She admired the unique ship models and received some souvenirs from the curator.
The Oinoussai Yacht Club provided some welcome drinks and canapés and an opportunity to converse with  locals and those from abroad who were still on vacation.
Finally, she enjoyed the promenade towards Zepaga and viewed the Naval Academy building.
The Oinoussian Mother statue waved goodbye as she returned to Chios in order to catch a flight to Athens but not before the water taxi stopped close to the mermaid so she could admire her.
This was a truly memorable visit. She fell in love with the island and will return. The island was grateful to have received such a lovely, modest and gracious guest and the lovely impression she left on all who were fortunate to meet her.
